Spices live with you. Or rather, they help you live a better, healthier, longer life. In India, spices have been used as home remedies for centuries. Discover in this section, how spices find an amazing place in your life while you thought they existed only in your kitchen.

Increase the life of your spices. Like their history, spices can have a long future too, if properly cared for. It's simple. Just read a few time-tested tips given here and you will actually find it easier said than done.

The most important quality is their volatility and once this is lost, they are no longer valued. Some handling and storage tips include the following:

  • Keep spices handy but make sure they are not in direct sunlight or heat area. This is because excessive heat will volatalize and dissipate its aromatic oils.

  • High humidity will tend to produce caking. So avoid storing them in a refrigerator. Instead, store them in a freezer in tightly sealed containers.

  • Because prolonged exposure to air will cause loss of flavor and aroma, make sure all spice containers are tightly closed after each use.

  • Grinding whole spices in a grinder or mortar & pestling prior to use and toasting them in a dry skillet over medium heat before grinding will help bring out even more flavor.
